Why is public understanding of science so poor?

Most people don't have a grasp of scientific principles because it's not taught adequately in schools, and many people don't bother to read about/research an idea before they develop an opinion. They're simply "parroting" bits and pieces of what they've heard on tv and radio without having even a superficial understanding of it.
