Why is the electoral college good?

How can it be good? the government is suppose to be By the people and For the People but the peoples total votes don't count if the electorate decides that all those voters were wrong and voted for the wrong guy. I think its all a sham and we are all sheep waiting for the slaughter. Who really controlls this country anyway?
