Does crochet always have a front and back?

Or, in other words, is there a way to pattern stripes so that it looks the same no matter which way you view it? I'm crocheting a Prisoner of Azkaban style Harry Potter scarf (two narrow stripes in accent, on larger blocks of base) and while it looks good from one side, the other side looks stupid. Scarves twist around when you wear them and I'd like it to look the same on both sides. I've been doing ordinary single crochet (since I'm a beginner), but I'm willing to try learning something more complex if I can get the effect I want. Thanks!
