Why do many people ume that just because your from new york your from the city or live near it?

ok so i just came back from florida and whenever someone asked me where im from i'll say from new york and they'll always be like wow your so lucky to live in the city or theyll ask hows the city and i'll respond ohh um i dont live in the city, im from long isand. & theyll be like ohh,so do you visit the city often and ill respond no ive only been there 6 times and i only like 30 minutes away. and whats up with people saying that new yorkers have an accent. i dont hear it at all lol
