What role did the fur trade play in the exploration and settlement of western Canada?

The fur trade was extremely important. The further west the trappers went, the more stretched out their supply lines became. Settlements and forts popped up behind them to act as bases of exploration, operation and commerce. Behind them came families from Europe and Eastern Canada, the various clergymen with conquest and conversion on their minds. Soon enough the west was won.
